[Hiring] Undergraduate Technical Intern - Multiscale Systems Science @Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Role Description

This position will support the Multiscale System Science Group’s Strategic Scientific Objective on identifying control points for manipulating multiscale systems. The Multiscale Systems Science Group is seeking an undergraduate student research technician to help design, develop, and maintain AI-driven workflows to assist in the automated drafting of scientific papers, including:

• Data analysis
• Figure generation
• Reference management

This role involves building and integrating a modular, agent-based pipeline that supports tasks such as:

• Research gathering
• Writing
• Scientific validation
• Document formatting

The candidate will work closely with scientific staff to ensure accuracy and reliability of outputs, while continuously evaluating and improving system performance. Additional responsibilities include:

• Developing and refining data analysis workflows for multiple scientific domains
• Collaborating with subject matter experts to guide and validate results
• Implementing safeguards to mitigate risks associated with AI-generated content

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working at the intersection of software development and scientific research, contributing to a human-in-the-loop system designed to streamline the scientific writing process.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma / GED or higher
• Degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university
• Taking at least 6 credit hours with an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Areas of study include the sciences (biology, chemistry, computational science, data science, or engineering) with a strong interest in artificial intelligence/machine learning
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred
• Detail oriented, able to work with minimal supervision
• Strong communication skills and able to work in a team environment
