Role Description

As a Trustee, you will help guide the British Safety Council in delivering its purpose: to ensure that no one is injured or made ill through their work. You will bring your expertise, experience and independent judgement to support the Board's decision-making, provide constructive challenge and contribute to the organisation's long-term success. Working as part of the Board of Trustees, you will help set the organisation's strategic direction, ensure good governance, oversee organisational performance, risk management and legal and regulatory compliance, and safeguard the charity's long-term sustainability, reputation and assets.

Key Responsibilities

• Help shape and oversee the organisation's vision, strategy and long-term direction.
• Ensure the charity operates in line with its purpose, values and strategic priorities.
• Provide constructive challenge and independent judgement to Board discussions and decision-making.
• Monitor organisational performance and hold the Executive Team to account for delivery.
• Ensure appropriate governance, legal and regulatory compliance, and effective risk management.
• Safeguard the charity's assets, reputation and long-term sustainability.
• Support the appointment, development and performance oversight of the Chief Executive.
• Contribute to Board effectiveness, succession planning and continuous improvement.

For this Trustee Appointment

You will also provide oversight of the British Safety Council's investment arrangements, offering constructive challenge to our external investment managers and supporting the Board in its stewardship of the charity's investments.

Time Commitment

Trustees attend an induction before joining the Board. The Board meets approximately four times a year during normal working hours, with meetings held in London and online where appropriate. Trustees also attend one annual strategy session and may occasionally participate in Board committees, recruitment panels or other events. Board papers are circulated in advance, and Trustees are expected to prepare for meetings.

Remuneration

This is an unremunerated voluntary appointment. Reasonable travel and other agreed out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Qualifications

• Experience in investment management and an understanding of investment governance.
• A commitment to the British Safety Council's purpose and values.
• Sound judgement, integrity and the ability to think strategically.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• The ability to provide constructive challenge and work collaboratively as part of a Board.
• Willingness to develop an understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees.
