Role Description

This role involves administering IBM i (iSeries) systems and managing DB2 databases.

  • Experience administering IBM i operating systems, including system configurations, upgrades, patches, and troubleshooting.
  • Expertise in managing IBM Power Systems (e.g., Power8, Power10) hosting iSeries environments.
  • Knowledge of SANs, IBM VTLs, and iSeries-specific storage solutions.
  • Proficiency in BRMS (Backup, Recovery, and Media Services) and other recovery solutions.
  • Strong understanding of security controls, user profile management, object authority, and compliance with CIS hardening.
  • Experience with logical partitioning (LPARs) and virtualization on IBM i.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, VPN, and networking protocols relevant to IBM i systems.
  • Ability to monitor and tune system performance using IBM tools such as Performance Data Investigator (PDI) and iDoctor.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation for system administration tasks.
  • Experience managing and optimizing DB2 for i (DB2/400), including SQL performance tuning and indexing strategies.
  • Knowledge of database security, including user privileges and encryption.
  • Implementation and maintenance of high-availability solutions, journaling, and data replication strategies.
  • Ability to support business applications reliant on iSeries DB2.
  • Analyze problems and administer more than one infrastructure area.
  • Understand and develop non-functional requirements for a system.
  • Proficient at DevOps concepts, scripting, and automated deployment.
  • Execute day-to-day tasks related to operational or project work.
  • Contribute to 24x7x365 days of on-call staff coverage.
  • Perform daily database and database application support, including:
    • Contributing to 24x7x365 staff coverage.
    • Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, MySQL, Redshift, AWS EMR database and application server administration.
    • Assisting with all duties related to ongoing operational database infrastructure on-premise and in the cloud.
    • Creating and maintaining database objects.
    • Monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving failed tasks or database issues.
    • Creating databases, database clusters, assigning permissions, and resolving connectivity issues.
    • Assisting IT management in prioritizing database administration team projects.
    • Monitoring database storage allocation and usage daily as well as other resource usage.
    • Assisting with backup standards and schedules, and recovery procedures.
    • Developing security plans, testing, and maintenance.
    • Developing and maintaining portions of the disaster recovery plan that pertain to the database servers.
    • Advising developers/end users on issues such as database design and application architecture.
    • Providing performance tuning related to database technology and database/server configuration.
    • Providing technical guidance to teammates.
    • Exporting/Importing data and data replication.
    • Scheduling jobs and events.
    • Managing special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years minimum experience deploying and/or administrating infrastructure solutions or database administration.
  • Strong working knowledge of automated deployment and Cloud platforms.
  • AWS Sysops certification or certifications in VMware, Microsoft, Cisco, Avaya, Oracle, SQL Server.
  • Critical thinker with demonstrated problem-solving techniques.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willing and able to quickly learn new technology.
