Role Description

As a Senior Implementation Consultant in Avalara's Professional Services organization, you will serve as a subject matter expert leading the delivery of large, complex, and high-visibility enterprise implementations for Avalara’s Excise platforms.

• Own the technical architecture and tax determination strategy for multi-jurisdiction, high-volume energy distributors, suppliers, and terminal operators.
• Serve as a technical escalation lead and drive practice-wide standards.
• Collaborate with external implementation partners and mentor consultants across the team.

Responsibilities

• Enterprise Solution Architecture & Delivery:
  • Lead the end-to-end technical delivery of complex, multi-tiered enterprise implementations.
  • Architect custom calculation logic and complex schedule/return mappings across high-volume transaction datasets.
  • Facilitate advanced architectural and functional design workshops with enterprise tax directors, IT leadership, and systems integrators.
  • Lead system integration testing (SIT) and UAT strategy, troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Manage project technical risk, proactively mitigating scope drift and identifying architectural constraints early.
• Practice Leadership & Escalation Management:
  • Act as a senior escalation point for critical customer issues and complex data anomalies.
  • Partner with Product Management, Core Engineering, and Support to diagnose root causes and advocate for platform enhancements.
  • Collaborate with and provide technical governance for third-party implementation partners.
  • Participate in pre-sales discovery, scoping calls, and Level-of-Effort (LOE) estimations.
• Mentorship & Practice Excellence:
  • Eligible to serve as Team Lead, providing technical coaching, peer review, and quality assurance for consultants.
  • Lead the creation of standardized implementation templates, automated validation scripts, and training curricula.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive experience in enterprise software implementation, tax technology consulting, systems integration, or technical solution delivery.
• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• In-depth subject matter expertise in excise/fuel and taxation, oil & gas supply chains, terminal operations, or indirect tax systems.
• Advanced technical troubleshooting skills (APIs, SQL/database queries, data transformation pipelines, ERP data structures).
• Proven ability to influence executive-level stakeholders and lead cross-functional technical teams without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior hands-on experience configuring Avalara Excise platforms (ATE, ARE) or similar tax engines.
• Deep knowledge of ERP ecosystems (SAP S/4HANA, Oracle ERP Cloud, PDI Enterprise, JD Edwards).

Pay Range Details

• Colorado: $88,000-$140,800 [annually]
• Washington: $88,000-$155,700 [annually]
• California: $88,000-$170,300 [annually]
• NYC: $97,100-$170,300 [annually]

The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the state listed. The successful candidate’s actual salary/wage may be based on various factors, such as geographic location, candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance, depending on the terms of the applicable plan and the employee’s role.
