Role Description

The Regional Safety Manager is responsible for assisting management in the general business operations of the company by overseeing and directing the company’s Safety Program for their assigned area(s). The overall goal is to protect the Company’s interests and support employees to successfully complete quality projects safely while promoting and enhancing client relationships and the company’s image.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and promote Alston Construction’s strong safety culture, both internally and externally.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment to perform daily duties and resolve issues.
  • Plan, develop, and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Make recommendations to improve processes and procedures for the Safety Program.
  • Remain current on all construction-related safety regulations and laws.
  • Identify training needs and develop safety awareness initiatives.
  • Conduct new hire safety orientations within the first 5 business days of hire.
  • Manage and conduct safety training in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Design and implement metrics to monitor safety initiatives and effectiveness.
  • Provide guidance to Superintendents, Project Managers, and other personnel regarding safety policies.
  • Evaluate subcontractors’ safety records through the SPERS process.
  • Create and maintain emergency response and crisis management plans.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and prepare detailed reports of findings.
  • Ensure project field documentation related to safety is properly processed.
  • Review Site Specific Safety and Health Plans (SSHPs) and ensure compliance.
  • Manage OSHA site visits and inspections.
  • Investigate all incidents and report findings to the Director of Safety.
  • Assist with Worker’s Compensation claims and return to work programs.
  • Coordinate drug testing and breath alcohol testing.
  • Prepare and maintain budgets for safety-related work.
  • Solicit feedback regarding areas of concern or opportunities for improvement.
  • Represent the organization in community or industry safety groups.
  • Maintain and submit Weekly/Monthly Safety Inspection Reports.
  • Ensure all personnel have access to safety materials and resources.
  • Evaluate and recommend third-party safety consultants.
  • Attend subcontractor meetings as needed.
  • Plan travel efficiently and maintain a travel schedule.
  • Participate in corporate meetings and forums.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with all safety policies and report suspected safety concerns.
  • Ensure job site compliance with the Safety Program and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
  • Conduct ergonomic inspections and make recommendations for compliance.
  • Remain current in all required safety training and certifications.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate safe behaviors of others.

Personal Responsibilities

  • Understand and work within the accepted ethical standards of the company.
  • Support and encourage diversity on projects and teams.
  • Stay current in all required training and certifications.
  • Continuously seek to improve skills and knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in construction safety management.
  • Valid State-issued driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • OSHA 30-hour Certification; OSHA 500 preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
  • Safety training/certifications in areas such as Fall Protection, Scaffolding, etc.
  • CSP, CHST or other safety certification preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to the construction industry.
  • Excellent presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to mentor and develop others.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proactive and adaptable to changing conditions.
  • Strong analytical and investigation skills.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach.
  • Lift 10 lbs.
  • Extensive reading from documents and computer.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and flexible schedules.
  • Willingness to travel frequently.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and field work.
  • Exposure to outside weather elements in the field.
  • May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Dress conducive to a building construction environment.
