Today - Labcorp is hiring a remote Production Bioinformatics Engineer. πŸ’Έ Salary: $125k - $135k annually πŸ“Location: USA

Role Description

Labcorp is seeking a US based remote Production Bioinformatics Engineer to join our team!

The Production Bioinformatics Engineer role is a founding member opportunity for a team purpose-built to scale clinical production bioinformatics across the Labcorp enterprise and an expert in building production bioinformatics systems, developing tools to visualize clinical lab & genomic data, and automating complex laboratory workflows. You will engineer software tools that improve the usability, scalability, and reliability of bioinformatics systems by converting production bottlenecks into lasting solutions through rigorous software, automation, and infrastructure. This role is especially well suited for someone who thrives at the intersection of bioinformatics, software engineering, and production support, and who wants to shape a team from the ground up. You will partner closely with bioinformatics R&D, clinical lab analysts, and a dedicated data analytics team to troubleshoot issues, improve data quality, and build durable, site-agnostic solutions for clinical workflows. As a founding member, you will have direct influence over how we build and how we work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Engineer tools and workflows to better analyze clinical genomic data and automate bioinformatics processes
  • Develop web tools to visualize and interact with genomic data, including IGV-based or browser-native genomic viewers
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, alerting, and reliability improvements for lab-facing and bioinformatics production systems
  • Recognize and address software automation opportunities and scalability bottlenecks
  • Deliver well-defined product features and improvements with minimal oversight
  • Effectively troubleshoot complex issues quickly and thoroughly across interconnected systems
  • Reason effectively about appropriate tools for particular problems and produce supporting evidence
  • Apply standard tools for analysis and visualization to test hypotheses and communicate findings
  • Contribute to code that is well-tested, well-documented, maintainable, and free from defects
  • Adhere to engineering and team-wide standards for quality
  • Navigate and understand unfamiliar code

Scientific Responsibilities:

  • Apply a wide range of bioinformatics algorithms, statistical techniques, and engineering methodologies with awareness of their accuracy, efficiency, assumptions, and limitations
  • Identify principled, robust, high-quality solutions to open-ended problems
  • Demonstrate substantial understanding of one or more product domains (e.g., somatic, germline, large events, metagenomics, copy number variation, repeat expansion detection, or structural variation)
  • Collaborate effectively with molecular biologists and laboratory stakeholders on assay development, workflows, and applications for genomics analysis
  • Evaluate genomic and operational data quality and support development of processes to improve quality, consistency, and traceability
  • Understand basic regulatory requirements for verification, validation, and documentation
  • Produce technical writing associated with compliance-related and operational activities

General Responsibilities:

  • Devise solutions based on limited information and precedent
  • Adapt existing approaches to resolve technical and operational issues
  • Use evaluation, judgment, and interpretation to select the right course of action
  • Build productive internal and external working relationships
  • Provide standard professional advice for review by experienced team professionals
  • Communicate effectively with internal users, stakeholders, and other development teams
  • Balance feature development, operational support, incident response, and continuous improvement work in a production environment

Qualifications

  • Master's degree with 3 or more years of experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Engineering, OR Ph.D., OR Bachelor's degree with 6 or more years of experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Engineering

Requirements

  • 2 or more years of experience with short-read and long-read sequencing platforms like Illumina, or PacBio
  • 2 or more years of experience with bioinformatics algorithms and their application to genomic data analysis
  • 2 or more years of experience with scalable bioinformatics infrastructure, including workflow orchestration like Docker, Nextflow, or GitHub Actions
  • 2 or more years of experience with regulatory requirements, including CLIA, CAP, and HIPAA, for clinical genomics applications
  • 1 or more years of experience with full-stack web development, including frameworks like Django, Flask, or React
  • 3 or more years of experience with one or more modern languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java
  • 3 or more years of experience with command-line tooling and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment
  • 2 or more years of experience with SQL and NoSQL datastores like PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or MongoDB
  • 1 or more years of experience with software development practices including version control, testing, code review, and documentation
  • 1 or more years of experience with software production deployment practices and tooling like Docker, CI/CD, and GitHub Actions
  • 1 or more years of experience using AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude
  • 1 or more years of experience with interactive data visualization tools like Plotly
  • 1 or more years of experience with observability and monitoring platforms like Grafana, Datadog, or PagerDuty

Benefits

  • Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD/LTD, 401(k), Paid Time Off (PTO) or Flexible Time Off (FTO), Tuition Reimbursement and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
