Role Description

This is highly administrative managerial and supervisory work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves supervising deputies and sergeants and other subordinate personnel involved in a variety of law enforcement assignments such as:

  • Motorized patrol
  • Traffic control and enforcement
  • Preliminary and follow-up investigation at crime scenes
  • Courthouse and port security
  • Vessel patrol
  • K-9 handling
  • Serving writs and other court process actions
  • Assisting in public safety education and community service programs

Employees in this class receive general supervision from an administrative superior but exercise independent judgment in completing the work assignments. Performs related work as directed.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current employee of the Broward Sheriff's Office classified as a Sergeant in the Department of Law Enforcement.
  • Successful completion of probationary period.
  • Three (3) years of continuous full-time paid experience as a BSO Sergeant in the Department of Law Enforcement.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor's or Master's Degree who successfully complete the promotional process will be eligible to receive additional percentage points to their final score.

Requirements

  • If claiming Veterans’ Preference, must have been reactivated for duty in the current role with qualifying service (at least 90 consecutive days).
  • Submit an updated DD-214 Member 4 or Service form by the listed closing date to be considered for preference points.
  • Submit required documents for educational credit by the listed closing date, including unofficial or official college transcripts or a copy of the degree.
  • Years of service as BSO Deputy Sheriff-DLE or Sergeant-DLE must be completed prior to the posting closing date for percentage points to be applied.

  • Educational Credit:
    • Bachelor's Degree = .5 percentage points
    • Master's Degree = 1.0 percentage points
  • Years of Service Credit:
    • Completion of Ten (10) to Fifteen (15) Years = .5 percentage points
    • Completion of Sixteen (16) Years or More = 1.0 percentage points

Examination Description

The promotional process will consist of two testing components:

  • A multiple-choice written exam based on material outlined on the Reading List.
  • Assessment exercises for candidates who score 75% or more on the written exam.

The expected duration of the promotional process could last 6-8 weeks from the written test date.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

  • Coordinates and assigns the work activities of sergeants, deputies, and subordinate personnel.
  • Supervises and participates in special criminal investigative units or specialized support activities.
  • Determines proper course of action in daily work activities and emergencies.
  • Conducts roll call and inspects personal appearance and equipment of personnel.
  • Receives complaints and requests for law enforcement assistance.
  • Prepares various narrative and statistical reports.
  • Accounts for all equipment, materials, supplies, and vehicles assigned to the specific operating unit.
  • Maintains overall responsibility for the successful completion of assigned duties.
  • Conducts employee performance evaluations and promotes career development.
  • Ensures that subordinate personnel have the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Analyzes reports prepared by subordinates for accuracy and completeness.
  • Approves leave requests and monitors overtime usage.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels and employee skill sets.
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings.

Compliance

Compliance with minimum training and standards of an accredited certification institution as set forth by the recommended FDLE guidelines and CJSTC is required.
