Role Description

The Texas Rising HBCU Organizer will develop and lead Texas Risingโ€™s statewide Historically Black College and University (HBCU) program. This role strengthens Texas Risingโ€™s reach and builds local capacity aligned with statewide campaigns. This role oversees recruiting, training, and supporting teams of college-age students on assigned HBCU campuses to build grassroots power and implement civic engagement and issue-advocacy campaigns. As a member of the Texas Rising team, the HBCU Coordinator is involved in working to advance and grow our network of activists and organizers.

Primary job responsibilities for this position center on the following (may be modified to include additional duties as assigned):

  • Grow engagement with Texas Risingโ€™s HBCU program on assigned college campuses.
  • Create innovative approaches to build and maintain a student base for Texas Rising HBCU chapters.
  • Identify student leaders on campuses to assist with recruitment efforts for chapter building.
  • Facilitate monthly HBCU cohort meetings and leadership trainings.
  • Develop HBCU-focused campaigns and tailored program materials.
  • Coordinate TX Rising student chapters on assigned campuses, including managing volunteers and supporting stipended student leaders.
  • Represent Texas Rising and TFN in the Community.
  • Execute plans and budgets to organize assigned chapters based on its unique characteristics for grassroots electoral and issue-advocacy campaigns.
  • Plan and coordinate logistics and build participation for Texas Rising events, both on campus and in the community.
  • Develop relationships with local partner organizations, allies in the community, and campus administrations in order to achieve programming goals.

Leadership Development:

  • Support development of statewide training curriculum (advocacy, electoral, and chapter organizing).
  • Provide training for student leaders and staff at HBCUs and across TXR.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of trainings and leadership development opportunities for young people, including curating those opportunities for the chapter.

Support the Texas Rising Department Goals:

  • Develop and demonstrate competency in utilizing TFN organizing tools to meet goals for mobilization and grassroots organizing.
  • Coordinate with the Data and Impact team to ensure systems are in place for effective campaign evaluation and reporting.
  • Occasional administrative tasks and data entry.
  • Assist with voter registration and other electoral activities.
  • Assist in expanding the Texas Rising program as capacity allows.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in community, campus, or grassroots organizing.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers or teams.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning events and coordinating logistics.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders (students, partners, campus staff).
  • Excellent communication skills (facilitation, public speaking, and written communication).
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel to campuses as needed.
  • Commitment to civic engagement, social justice, and youth leadership development.

Requirements

  • Experience working specifically with HBCU campuses or Black student communities.
  • Background in electoral organizing, voter registration, or issue advocacy campaigns.
  • Experience developing training curriculum or leading leadership development programs.
  • Familiarity with data tracking systems and using data to drive organizing strategy.
  • Prior experience supervising or supporting stipended leaders or interns.
  • Knowledge of Texas political landscape and higher education systems.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.
