Role Description

INS is building a commissioning practice to support conventional generation, wind, solar, battery energy storage and other grid-connected power projects, and we’re looking for a Director of Commissioning to build and lead it. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You’ll bring substantial commissioning and testing experience, stay technically engaged in project execution, develop trusted client relationships and build a high-performing team as the practice grows. We’re looking for an experienced commissioning professional who has moved into leadership without stepping away from the technical work.

What You’ll Do

• Build the commissioning practice
  • Build, lead and grow INS’s commissioning practice, including team structure, technical standards, execution processes and quality expectations.
  • Hire, mentor and develop engineers and commissioning professionals, drawing on your industry relationships and network to build the team as workload grows.
  • Partner with INS leadership on proposals, project strategy, staffing, client development and growth of the commissioning business line.
  • Perform and coordinate QA/QC in line with the INS Quality Management System.
• Lead hands-on commissioning and testing
  • Lead and personally support commissioning and testing for conventional generation, wind, solar PV, BESS and related grid-connected facilities.
  • Develop commissioning plans and coordinate project readiness, test procedures, field activities, technical documentation and closeout.
  • Lead or review performance testing of generation resources, including reactive capability, voltage regulation, frequency response, telemetry and other applicable grid-performance tests.
  • Review field and test data, evaluate resource performance, identify technical issues and develop practical corrective actions, providing technical leadership through field testing, troubleshooting and startup.
• Partner with clients, utilities and the grid
  • Support utility and ISO/RTO commissioning requirements, coordinating with clients, utilities, OEMs, SCADA providers, EPCs and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Support interconnection and grid-integration activities through commissioning and commercial operation.
  • Build strong client relationships and identify opportunities to expand commissioning and related engineering services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
• About 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in power-system, generation, interconnection, testing or commissioning work.
• Hands-on experience commissioning and testing grid-connected generation or energy infrastructure, including renewable generation and/or energy storage such as wind, solar PV and BESS.
• A strong understanding of utility and ISO/RTO commissioning processes, technical requirements and project interfaces.
• Ability to interpret test results, telemetry, models, drawings and technical documentation, and to work directly with engineers to resolve technical issues.
• A track record of moving from technical engineering work into project, team or practice leadership, and the ability to build, mentor and lead a team while staying engaged in project execution.
• Experience working directly with clients, utilities, OEMs, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to represent INS credibly with clients and industry partners.
• Ability to travel as needed for project commissioning, client meetings and field support.

Requirements

• Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
• Direct experience with ERCOT commissioning and performance-testing processes.
• Experience with conventional generation, wind, solar and BESS across multiple project types.
• Experience reviewing PMU, SCADA, telemetry and field-test data.
• Existing client relationships or an industry network relevant to commissioning and grid-integration services.
• Experience building a new team, practice or service line within an engineering or consulting organization.
