Role Description

Responsible for the effective management and development of the Benchmark Certification Schemes for PPE, Fire, Construction, Plumbing and Electronics within defined practice, delivering high-quality, “right first time” product evaluation, achieving client satisfaction and achieving its commercial targets. The position will also require liaising with a global team of product specialists to ensure that Benchmark applications are progressed in a timely manner. The role will also require the interaction with the Australian Gas Mark to ensure its smooth running. In addition, there will be attendance at trade shows, trade and technical committee meetings and there will be a requirement for occasional overseas travel.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Operational Delivery:
    • Plans, prioritises and supervises own work and global applications for Benchmark certification.
    • Ensures all certification applications are project managed and processed timely and effectively.
    • Provides sales support when requested.
    • Reviews technical reports if required or supported by the Technical Lead.
    • Delivers certification recommendations and the process surrounding them in a timely manner.
    • Maintains excellent lines of communication with clients.
    • Maximises fee-earning project (SMO) utilisation.
    • Delivers projects (SMOs) to customer expectations and deadlines.
    • Delivers profitable projects (SMOs) with high-quality technical content.
    • Maintains and processes SMO & Workflow Management effectively and timely.
    • Completes Three Year reviews effectively and timely.
    • Manages Additional Effort and PG leads effectively and timely.
    • Maintains accurate project plans to ensure business finances are accurately reflected.
    • Provides accurate forecasts of time and revenue as required by the Management Team.
    • Recommends the issue, re-issue, suspension or withdrawal of certificates, reporting recommendations in accordance with BSI policy and procedures.
    • Provides support as required to practice management.
  • Technical Delivery:
    • Proactively identifies and represents BSI’s interests with external bodies.
    • Manages the interface with accreditation/regulatory bodies at an operational level.
    • Identifies new and/or amended product standards/directives to keep BSI’s certification schemes relevant.
    • Works with Compliance and Risk team to ensure regulatory requirements are met.
    • Manages customer NCR effectively and timely.
    • Delivers Standard Transitions in conjunction with the Technical Lead.
    • Ensures Protocol Management compliance is up to date with market needs.
    • Analyses and identifies training and development needs for effective succession planning.
    • Provides policy and authoritative input on technical, regulatory and procedural issues.
    • Remains informed of certification, accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Commercial Delivery:
    • Identifies market and client development opportunities to support innovation.
    • Works closely with Sales Team, clients and test laboratories to assess client enquiries.
    • Exhibits on behalf of BSI at relevant customer events.
    • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with current and potential clients.
    • Delivers re-scope fees and manages customer expectations effectively.

Key Dimensions

  • Delivers JAS-ANZ or equivalent accredited certification projects.
  • Manages projects with individual values from a few hundred pounds up to c£500,000.
  • Balances targets for delivery, sales and development.
  • Global travel as required to support business development growth and client certification requirements.
  • Plans and prioritises project effort to meet business objectives and exceed client expectations.
  • Recognised as a thought-leader within relevant market and industry sectors.

  • Ensures compliance with processes for maintaining robust certification decisions.
  • Achieves appropriate representation at relevant product-related forums.

Qualifications

  • An academic or technical qualification such as a Masters or Bachelor's degree/HNC/HND and/or equivalent industry experience.
  • Potential knowledge of a range of Australian, International, European or British Standards.
  • Good understanding of management systems certification, product certification and testing concepts.
  • Comprehensive understanding of quality systems, philosophies and principles.
  • Understanding of national and international developments in certification and testing standards.
  • Knowledge of relevant product-related legislation and European Directives.
  • Comprehensive understanding of assessment techniques, preferably with experience as a lead assessor.
  • Proven experience of managing projects and resources.
  • Experience in Quality Assurance in multiple industry sectors.
  • Experience in Certification techniques used in BSI or similar Certification Bodies.
  • Self-starter who can problem solve quickly and effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of business principles and operating practices.
  • Customer focused and solution oriented.
  • Excellent organisation and planning skills with high attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with office IT systems and their application to commercial and technical processes.
